Learning Valuable Life Skills

Many people think learning to play a musical instrument is just that. When I tell them it is a whole lot more they can’t believe it. Sure, learning basic technics is the starting place. As we develop skill it becomes easier to think about other things. Our attention span develops. We can think about more than one thing. Our confidence increases.

Developing listening skills is a critical life skill that is a by-product of learning to play a musical instrument. It not only makes us better musicians but helps us have better relationships. Listening skills even makes us more successful in our careers.

One of the things music encourages is self-expression. I start right at the very beginning of lessons talking about what the piece seems to be saying and how they can play those feelings through the piece. Music lends itself to getting in touch with emotions Learning how to go inward to discover emotions is an incredibly valuable life lesson that learning a musical instrument facilitates. The instrument becomes the vehicle that allows our self expression.

Another thing learning to play a musical instrument gives us is the opportunity to discover the creative process. Being introduced to the concept of process can be one of the most important tools we have for all our lives. Another valuable life lessons gained from learning a musical instrument is learning how to think for yourself. Becoming aware of what we like and what we don’t when listening to and playing music is the start of living our lives in a healthy and integrated way.

Learning how to turn inside is a skill that is useful in all areas of life. It helps us know ourselves. Knowing who we are and how we think and feel are invaluable skills to have. As one of the many bi-products from learning to play an instrument this is probably the most important. It’s never too late to learn.

I believe it is important to get to know ourselves. Learning an instrument is a way to learn and develop this valuable skill.
